Having one, two or three checklists is a good way to make a strenuous process bearable.

Who to Notify
• The post office, for mail redirection
• Your financial institution(s) to transfer or close accounts
• The electoral registrar
• The tax department
• Your insurance company to transfer or terminate household insurance
• Your life insurance company
• Your car insurance company
• Your health insurance fund
• Your children’s school. Ask for status-letters on your children
• Relatives, friends, and regular correspondents
• Club memberships
• Publications you subscribe to
• Your doctor and dentist, for copies of medical records
• Your lawyer
• Your place of worship

Services to Discontinue
• Gas
• Water
• Electricity
• Telephone/Cable
• Newspaper/Publication delivery

Other pre-move tasks
• Defrost refrigerator/freezer
• Disconnect washing machine and drain waste water
• Check manufacturer(s) so major appliances are correctly prepared for moving
• Empty all gas cylinders
• Return books, videos, etc.
• Put important items such as passports and tickets in your personal luggage.
• Arrange for someone to look after your children during packing. This can be a   stressful time for them.
• Wash thoroughly any items that may be of interest to Quarantine/Agriculture, i.e.   mowers, garden tools, golf equipment, bicycles, etc if moving overseas.
• Advise movers of any high value items i.e. antiques, paintings, etc. Remember   to fill out the proper insurance forms for your high-value items
